Veeno Selezione – Wellington Street, Leeds

Veeno seem to be taking the UK by storm since I lasted visited (read about it here), it feels like every week they’re opening a new venue. I had a thoroughly lovely, if not VERY boozy time when I attended their last wine tasting evening so wasn’t going to say no to an invite for their newly opened Wellington Street gaff was I?

The new place is a little bit tucked away, it took us some Google Mapping to find it but in all honesty I’m not really round that side of town much so imagine it’s not a mystery if you work nearby. It feels larger than the Duncan Street Veeno but still has that relaxed vibe with a mixture of big tables for groups and little corners if you’re after something more intimate.

We had the Selezione Wine Tasting which is a similar set up to the previous tasting I had (wine and a nibble pairing) but features their premium wines and includes; 2 whites, 2 reds, a rosé and a sweet wine. It’s a little more expensive than the Classic Wine Tasting I’d previously done with Veeno (£26.90 rather than £19.90) but I do think you can taste a difference in the wines.

Like the Classic Wine Tasting you’re given a booklet which outlines all the notes and details about each wine so you can sort of get on with it yourself which is quite nice if you fancy a natter with your friends. I reckon it’d also make a good date as you’ve got an ‘activity’ plus drunken dates [big tick].

I won’t go through all the wines and nibbles so you can find out for yourself but they were delicious; even the rosé which I usually can’t stand. Though I have to admit I did wimp out of the dessert wine (I hate it) and opted for another glass of the Perricone red wine instead. The food was also really good; you can taste the quality of the produce. Standouts for me were the Mozzarella (so, so creamy) and the Tiramisu which is my absolute favourite pudding (bonus that my friend doesn’t like coffee so I got to eat hers too!). Like the Classic Wine Tasting the nibbles aren’t really a full meal so perhaps order a few more bits unless your intention is to get totally leathered.

Another very lovely evening at Veeno, I can see why they seem to be opening them around the country at an exponential rate. The wine tasting is a really good way to try some wines you wouldn’t usually go for (though sorry sweet wine, afraid it’s always going to be a no) at your own pace.
The wine tasting was complimentary, views are my own though.
