Gifted press meal.
If I had to name my top 5 favourite things in the world; then wine and cheese would definitely be up there so an evening spent at Veeno in Leeds sampling different wines alongside Italian cheese & meats is an absolute dream. I’ve been to Veeno a few times now (read about them here and here) and it never tires.
The wine selection is really quite terrific – all Italian with many from their own vineyards in Italy. Go for one of their flights though – it’s the best way to sample a few different ones. We had the Family Flight (£9) including a white, a rosé and a red – all delicious and perfect to try a range.
Veeno isn’t necessarily somewhere you’d immediately think of if you’re going out for dinner – it’s very much wine with food rather than a restaurant destination. But if you’re looking for somewhere you can graze leisurely over some quality Italian produce with a good wine then it’s the perfect place! We shared the Grande Platter (£25) which is just the right size for 2 people and includes a huge range of Italian cheeses, meats, breads and olives. Highlights were the truffle cheese (excellent with a bit of honey), the smoked ham and of course, simply bread dipped into quality olive oil. It’s very much a lazy, grazy style supper best enjoyed with a few glasses of wine and the latest gossip.
Nearly very full from our platter, we *had* to try dessert – Tiramisu (£4.50) is my all time favourite and this is up there with the best I’ve had. Often I find ‘proper’ tiramisu to be very heavy and too rich but this was light without losing any of the rich, creamy flavours you find. We finished off our drinking with a glass of prosecco (£6.90) – well it would be rude not to in an Italian bar right?
Veeno really is transporting yourself to Italy for the evening – great wine, delicious food and a holiday style leisurely atmosphere. You almost forget that you’re in the city centre of Leeds…
